Blue Lou

Lyrics ,Music:Irving Mills ,Edgar Sampson

The song was publishe 1935.

Edgar Sampson’s composition was introduced
by alto saxophonist/trumpeter Benny Carter
on his October 16, 1933, session for Columbia Records.

1934 was a banner year for alto saxophonist/arranger Sampson.
He wrote two tunes that became big hits, “Don’t Be That Way”
and “Stompin’ at the Savoy,”
and two others that became standards of the swing era,
“If Dreams Come True” and “Blue Lou.”

“Blue Lou” is rarely ever sung, as it is more a composition for
“blowing” than singing.
However, Ella Fitzgerald recorded it in the 1950s,
the lyrics telling the story of a woman who is sad because
her love has left her.

Blue Lou, blue Lou,
Her baby was such a phoney,
He left her blue and lonely!

Blue Lou, blue Lou,
So blue and broken hearted,
Before her romance got started!

Cryin', sighin' is all she ever do,
Forgettin' regrettin' the love she never knew!

So she's blue, true blue,
Until she discover her lover,
She'll always be Miss blue!

Ooh, ooh, ooh, Lou,
Oh, she's so blue Lou!
Ooh, ooh, blue Lou,
(scat)

Oh blue Lou, blue Lou,
Her baby was such a phoney,
He left her blue and lonely!

Blue Lou, blue blue Lou,
True true, true true Lou,
So blue and broken hearted,
Before her romance got started!

Cryin', sighin' is all she ever do,
Forgettin' regrettin' the love she never knew!

So she's so blue, true blue,
Until she discover her lover,
She'll always be Miss blue!
She just wants love, pretty baby,
True blue Lou!
